US Debt Crisis Triggers Warning Signs for Bitcoin Price and Gold
The US debt crisis has reached a critical point, according to some investors. The country's $40 trillion debt pile is seen as a potential 'death spiral' that could send the price of Bitcoin and gold higher.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently announced measures to lower bond yields and cut government borrowing costs, but these efforts have been met with skepticism by some market participants. Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller warned that higher bond yields can only be brought down by reducing government borrowing, which is a difficult task given the country's large deficit.
The US federal budget deficit for July hit $432 billion, its largest monthly deficit since March 2021, and catapulted the 2026 fiscal-year-to-date budget gap to $1.8 trillion. This has fueled fears that the debt pile is becoming unmanageable, which in turn is driving bets that Bitcoin and gold will climb.
BlackRock's head of crypto, Robert Mitchnick, said that when concerns about debt and deficits return to the headlines, it tends to benefit 'assets like bitcoin and gold.' The company's market-leading Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) has grown to hold almost 750,000 Bitcoin worth around $50 billion since its launch in early 2024.
