US Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion, Setting Stage for Cryptocurrency Rally
Grayscale's chief research officer Zach Pandl believes rising US debt could have a positive impact on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Zcash. According to Pandl, the increasing level of government debt will put pressure on bonds and reduce confidence in fiat currencies.
Pandl points out that investors will be looking for alternative means of storing value, which would favor cryptocurrencies. The US Treasury has recently conducted bond repurchases, which have lowered the risk-adjusted supply of Treasuries and provided some stimulus to the economy.
However, Pandl notes that this is only a temporary solution and does not address the underlying fiscal issue of the country. The national debt of the United States has exceeded $40 trillion for the first time, and Pandl warns that higher government borrowing comes with increased private sector borrowing, resulting in greater demand for financing.
Pandl believes that growing debt could result in a gradual loss of trust in conventional currencies, leading to an increase in demand for assets providing monetary and financial exposures outside the norm. In this scenario, he sees physical gold and certain cryptocurrencies as beneficiaries.
