US Dollar Strength Weighs on Gold Prices, Sparking Declines in Mining Stocks
Gold prices dipped slightly on September 23 due to a stronger US dollar, causing gold stocks to decline. Spot gold fell by 1.1% to $4,315.27 per ounce, influenced by a more robust American currency and hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials.
The increased expectations for monetary tightening weighed heavily on gold prices, leading to a downturn in shares of US-listed gold mining companies. Newmont Mining (NEM.N) and Barrick Gold (ABX.TO, B.N) both declined by 1.8%, while other prominent miners such as Gold Fields (GFI.N), AngloGold Ashanti (AU.N), Harmony Gold (HMY.N), and Sibanye Stillwater (SBSW.N) saw declines ranging from 3.6% to 5.5%
Canadian mining companies, including Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM.TO, AEM.N) and Kinross Gold (K.TO, KGC.N), were also impacted by the decline in gold prices.
