US Eyes Stablecoin Push to Bolster Dollar Dominance
The US government is exploring ways to support dollar-denominated stablecoin projects overseas. The aim is to expand the use of the US dollar worldwide and funnel reserves into short-term government securities, according to Bloomberg.
Regulated stablecoins can help increase demand for US Treasury debt by allowing users to hold dollars in a more efficient way. This could be achieved through public-private partnerships between US agencies and private firms, which would provide funding and expertise to support the growth of dollar-backed stablecoins abroad.
The GENIUS Act provides a regulatory framework for payment stablecoin issuers, requiring them to hold reserves equal to the dollar value of all outstanding tokens. This includes cash, qualifying deposits, short-term Treasuries, repurchase agreements, and money market funds that invest in qualifying reserve assets.
