US Government's Cryptic Crypto Holdings: A Mysterious $20 Billion Balance
In March 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order creating the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The move aimed to consolidate government-held Bitcoin and make it easier for Washington to add more without spending taxpayer money.
The operative language of the order was less glamorous but included important details. Every federal agency had 30 days to account for its digital assets, identify custodial accounts, and review which eligible Bitcoin could be transferred into the reserve. Treasury then had 60 days to evaluate where reserve accounts should be located, how they would be managed, and whether Congress needed to authorize any part of the operation.
The scope of the executive order showed that the White House was not simply riding the crypto wave or announcing plans to hoard Bitcoin. It ordered the government to count its holdings, sort them by legal status, identify who controlled them, and decide which ones belonged in the reserve.
