US Intervention in Yen May Trigger Bitcoin Rally or Sell-Off
The United States has intervened to support Japan's yen for the first time since 1998. This rare move, which involves collaboration between the Bank of Japan (BOJ), the U.S. Treasury, and Japan's Ministry of Finance (MOF), aims to stabilize the yen in response to its weakening due to an ultra-loose monetary policy and a large interest rate differential with the United States.
The intervention typically works by purchasing Japanese yen and selling U.S. dollars, which would increase demand for the yen and lower the USD/JPY exchange rate. According to President Trump, 'They have a weakening yen and they wanted a little bit of help, and we're always there for Japan. Japan has been very good to us, with the exception, of course, of Pearl Harbor.'
The key factor in determining the impact on Bitcoin is the rate at which the yen will appreciate. A steady hike would support riskier assets like Bitcoin, increase global liquidity, and devalue the U.S. dollar. However, a strong rally might cause the yen carry trade to quickly unwind, forcing investors to sell stocks, Bitcoin, and other assets to pay back yen-denominated loans.
