US Military Faces Magnet Production Crisis by 2027
The US military is facing a magnet production crisis, as domestic capacity falls far short of demand. By January 1, 2027, Pentagon suppliers will be prohibited from sourcing rare earth magnets from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea due to a Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) rule.
The problem is clear: US demand for neodymium-iron-boron magnets is around 48,000 metric tons per year, while domestic supply in 2025 was just 300 metric tons. Even with aggressive scaling, US output is projected to reach only about 5,000 metric tons by early 2026.
The lack of magnet production capacity has sparked interest in blockchain-based tokenization projects, which aim to track the provenance of raw materials from mine to manufacturer. This is seen as a way to ensure compliance with DFARS rules and avoid contract disqualification.
