US Power Grid Faces Historic Capacity Shortfall Amid Data Center Demand
PJM Interconnection, the largest power grid in the US, is facing its first-ever capacity shortfall. The grid serves around 67 million people across 13 states and Washington D.C., but data centers are devouring power at an unprecedented rate.
The PJM's capacity auction failed to secure sufficient supply for the June 2027 through May 2028 delivery period, marking a historic first. Data centers alone are projected to add over 30 gigawatts of peak electricity demand by 2030, equivalent to the output of 30 nuclear power plants.
To address this shortage, PJM has launched an emergency plan, including a reliability backstop procurement auction and a $6.7 billion transmission investment plan targeting congestion in Northern Virginia. The US Department of Energy also intervened with an emergency order in May 2026, giving PJM authority to curtail power to data centers with backup generation during grid emergencies.
The capacity price increases could impose an additional financial burden exceeding $100 billion on consumers through 2033, according to estimates. This raises concerns about the impact on crypto and digital asset operators who rely on flexible load management, as PJM's emergency curtailment authority may set a precedent for large-scale mining facilities.
