US Sanctions BitBank for Alleged IRGC Ties, Bitcoin Price Remains Unfazed
The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned Tehran-based cryptocurrency exchange BitBank, alleging it moved hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The designation freezes BitBank's property under U.S. jurisdiction and bars Americans from transacting with the exchange.
The sanctions also have a secondary impact, exposing foreign intermediaries that process transactions tied to BitBank to losing access to the US financial system. Notably, OFAC did not publish any specific wallet addresses in this action, unlike some past crypto-related designations.
Despite the significance of the designation, which connects to Hormuz Safe Marine Services Authority and a major geopolitical flashpoint, Bitcoin's price has remained relatively stable around $80,000. Analysts suggest that traders treated the BitBank designation as a continuation of an existing enforcement pattern rather than a new shock.
