US Sanctions Russia-Linked Crypto Payment Network A7
The US Treasury Department has designated A7 as a significant transnational criminal organization, imposing sanctions on the Russia-linked crypto payment network. The move is part of an effort to cut off A7's route into global liquidity markets.
A7 processed over $17 billion in dollar-denominated transactions between January 2025 and June 2026, with FinCEN saying it used its ruble-backed token, A7A5, as a bridge into more widely accepted digital assets like USDT. The network has been accused of helping Russian sanctioned entities, Iran's central bank, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps move money through companies designed to make restricted transactions appear ordinary.
The proposed rule would require covered financial institutions to apply risk-based procedures for detecting prohibited transactions involving A7 sub-agents. Exchanges and OTC desks will have to decide how aggressively to tighten screening around counterparties that may sit several steps removed from the sanctioned network.
