US Senate Advances Clarity Act to Regulate Cryptocurrencies
The US Senate is pushing forward with the Clarity Act, a legislation aimed at establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. The bill, which has been supported by President Donald Trump and the crypto industry, would provide clearer rules for determining when digital tokens should be classified as securities or commodities.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune filed to set up a key procedural vote on the Clarity Act, which is expected after the August recess in mid-September. The move indicates that Senate Republican leaders believe they may still secure the 60 votes required to advance the bill.
The legislation currently needs the support of at least eight Democrats in addition to all voting Republicans in the Senate. Democratic opposition remains a significant obstacle, with lawmakers seeking additional safeguards and restrictions related to cryptocurrency activities by government officials.
