US Senate Bill Targets Crypto Mining and AI Data Centers with Emissions Penalties

Share

A proposed US Senate bill could significantly impact crypto mining and AI infrastructure operations. The Clean Cloud Act, introduced by Democratic Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and John Fetterman, aims to curb rising power demand from data-heavy industries by imposing emissions limits and financial penalties on facilities with over 100 kilowatts of installed IT capacity.

The bill would require the EPA to set regionally based emissions performance standards, with an initial target of an 11% annual emissions reduction. Facilities exceeding these limits could face penalties starting at $20 per metric ton of CO2e, increasing annually by inflation plus an additional $10 per ton.

Critics argue that the bill unfairly singles out crypto mining and risks clashing with former President Donald Trump's deregulatory stance. Industry leaders warn that ongoing trade tensions and aggressive tariffs could further disrupt operations, which may be fragile given the sector's recent diversification into AI applications.
