US Senate Blocks CLARITY Act Over Trump Family Crypto Holdings
The US Senate has failed to pass the CLARITY Act, a bill designed to bring cryptocurrency markets under federal regulation. The legislation stalled due to controversy surrounding President Donald Trump's potential conflicts of interest.
Trump had expressed support for the bill, stating it would 'energize' the crypto market, but Democrats blocked its passage citing concerns over his family's involvement in cryptocurrency ventures.
The CLARITY Act aimed to clarify the legal status of cryptocurrencies and establish which regulator has jurisdiction. It would have brought crypto exchanges, brokers, custodians, and decentralized finance into the federal regulatory framework, subjecting them to consumer protection and trading surveillance standards.
Despite clearing the House of Representatives with bipartisan support in July last year, the bill fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance in the Senate. The controversy surrounding Trump's potential conflicts of interest was a major factor in its failure.
