US Senate Debates Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Stablecoin Yield Disputes
The US Senate is debating the CLARITY Act, a comprehensive cryptocurrency regulation bill that includes provisions on stablecoin yield products. The bill requires 60 votes to overcome procedural hurdles and proceed to a floor vote before the August recess begins on August 6, 2026.
Banking groups support the bill overall but seek specific changes to restrict stablecoin-related yield offerings, which they fear could divert deposits from traditional banks. Rob Nichols, CEO of the American Bankers Association, said the bill contains 'a lot of good in it' but called for surgical changes to two paragraphs concerning stablecoin yield provisions.
Despite banks' concerns, Coinbase's chief policy officer Faryar Shirzad argued that major banks are already integrating crypto technologies. The CLARITY Act passed the House last year but stalled amid disputes over stablecoin yield rules. Senate Republican lawmakers have so far avoided firm public positions on the yield issue.
