US Senate Report Exposes Tether's Role in Iran's Illicit Finances

A recent report by US Senate Democrats has raised concerns about the use of Tether's stablecoin, USDT, in Iran. The report, led by Senator Richard Blumenthal, found that 84% of cryptocurrency wallets sanctioned for connections to Iran have transacted in USDT. These transactions helped the Iranian government move funds across borders and bolster its currency under stringent US sanctions.

The report analyzed 846 cryptocurrency wallets that were sanctioned due to their ties with Iran. It found that most of these wallets used USDT, which is a dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Tether. The company behind USDT has stated its commitment to cooperating with the US government and highlighted its support for freezing nearly $550 million in Iran-linked USDT.

Senator Blumenthal called upon the US Treasury and Justice Departments to investigate Tether's involvement in Iran's financial activities. He described USDT as a 'central part' of Iran's shadow banking system, enabling the country to finance various activities. The allegations come amid escalating sanctions against Iran by the US Treasury Department.
