US Slams Brakes on A7 Network with $17B Sanctions and Crypto Restrictions
The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on the Russia-linked A7 network, designating it as a significant transnational criminal organization. The move is part of a broader effort to crack down on the network's activities, which authorities say involve the movement of over $17 billion in dollar-denominated transactions between January 2025 and June 2026.
A7 uses the ruble-backed A7A5 token as an internal accounting and settlement asset, which is then converted into more widely accepted cryptocurrencies, including USDT. FinCEN's proposal targets this conversion circuit, prohibiting covered financial institutions from sending or receiving funds involving identified A7 subagents.
The Treasury Department's designation imposes an immediate compliance obligation, requiring property and interests in property of blocked persons to be frozen and reported to OFAC.
