US Strikes on Merchant Vessels Complicate Iran's Narrative of Victory

The US military has struck several merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, complicating Iran's narrative that it is winning the ongoing conflict. The latest incident involved a container ship near an Iranian port, which was disabled by US fire.

The US Central Command forces fired on multiple ships between July 15 and July 24, targeting those that ignored blockade warnings and attempted to reach Iranian ports. Among the confirmed incidents were the disablement of the oil tanker Belma and the vessel identified as the Lavine, with strikes aimed at disabling propulsion rather than sinking the ships outright.

The escalation of US action was triggered by an Iranian strike on the Cyprus-flagged container ship GFS Galaxy in early July. This attack on a third-country vessel prompted direct US military retaliation, expanding the scope of the conflict beyond what either side had publicly framed as acceptable.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway with significant oil trade passing through it every day, and the physical presence or absence of functional commercial traffic is immediately measurable. The accumulation of incidents, each individually documented and confirmed by CENTCOM, builds a picture of sustained US operational dominance in the strait itself.
