US Towns Resist Crypto Mining Operations Amid Energy Concerns
Mount Carmel has joined a growing list of US towns pushing back against energy-intensive digital infrastructure, voting to ban cryptocurrency mining operations and data centers on July 23. The decision reflects concerns over electricity demand, noise, water usage, environmental impact, and the effect on rural neighborhoods.
The move follows opposition to data center development in nearby Mt. Carmel Township, Pennsylvania, where residents voiced concerns about proposed facilities threatening nearby homes, forests, and community character. They called for stricter zoning rules, larger buffer zones, and tougher penalties for violations.
Critics also argued that proposed fines for violating data center regulations were too small compared with the financial resources of major operators. Some residents pushed officials to introduce a temporary moratorium while local rules were reviewed.
