US Treasury Joins Crypto Industry in Preparing for Quantum Computing Threat
The US Treasury has launched its Quantum-Readiness Task Force to address the threat of quantum computers to financial systems. One of the three workstreams focuses on digital assets and emerging technology risks, which could impact cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
According to a spokesperson, America must lead in securing technologies that power the economy, ensuring the financial system remains strong, secure, and competitive as new technologies reshape the global landscape.
The public-private group will bring together government agencies, financial institutions, market infrastructure operators, and technology providers to identify critical cryptographic dependencies and prepare for implementation challenges. This initiative follows President Donald Trump's June executive order accelerating the federal government's transition to post-quantum cryptography.
Crypto companies like Coinbase had already begun preparing for the threat, with its independent quantum advisory council urging blockchain developers to plan for technical and governance decisions before quantum computers can attack current cryptography. About 7 million Bitcoin are currently considered potentially vulnerable due to their public keys being exposed through older address formats or address reuse.
