US Treasury Takes Step towards Quantum-Safe Finance with New Task Force
The US Treasury has launched its Quantum-Readiness Task Force to address potential threats from quantum computing. One of the three workstreams focuses on digital assets and emerging technology risks.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the importance of securing technologies that power the economy, saying 'America must lead in securing the technologies that power our economy.'
The task force brings together government agencies, financial institutions, market infrastructure operators, and technology providers to identify critical cryptographic dependencies, improve interoperability, and prepare for implementation challenges.
Crypto companies are advised to examine how cryptography is embedded across custody systems, transaction signing, authentication, and third-party infrastructure, and whether those systems can eventually migrate without disrupting customer access or interoperability.
Around 7 million Bitcoin are currently considered potentially vulnerable due to older address formats or address reuse. The crypto industry had already begun preparing for this threat, with Coinbase's independent quantum advisory council urging developers to plan ahead.
