US Unleashes Economic Fury Against Iran
The US Treasury is launching a financial campaign to isolate Iran economically, according to US Secretary Scott Bessent. Bessent said that Washington would apply unprecedented economic measures on Tehran as differences over the Strait of Hormuz persist.
The measures will combine economic isolation with the continued blockade of the strait, preventing anything from entering or exiting Iranian ports. The US Treasury has targeted Iranian bank accounts, crypto wallets, and assets around the world, cutting off payments to both the leadership in the regime and the government itself.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement denouncing what it said was a 'hostile Iranian attack' on two vessels affiliated with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Iran has refused to link progress to a full reopening of the strait unless Washington 'corrects its behavior', introducing six conditions that the US must adhere to.
Abdul Wahed Jalal Nori, a lecturer at the International Islamic University Malaysia, warned that maximum coercion does not necessarily translate into political capitulation. He said that Washington's pressure may push Iran into deeper economic isolation, but instead of softening its stance, it could harden Tehran's resistance and widen regional confrontation.
