US Weighs Overseas Expansion of Dollar-Backed Stablecoins
The US government is considering an initiative to promote the use of dollar-backed stablecoins abroad. The plan aims to strengthen the dollar's role as the world's reserve currency by partnering with private-sector firms through joint ventures.
This development comes as other regions accelerate digital infrastructure work, including central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilots and cross-border payment platforms.
The proposed approach relies on a predictable compliance framework, which would enable overseas adoption of dollar-backed stablecoins. The initiative involves multiple federal agencies, including the Treasury Department, the State Department, and the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
