USDC Surges Past $72 Billion Market Cap Amid Regulatory Tailwind
Circle's stablecoin, USDC, has made significant strides in regaining its market dominance over the past year. In August 2026, its market capitalization added $8 billion to reach approximately $72 billion.
This growth marks a notable recovery from the 2023 Silicon Valley Bank collapse, which had temporarily spooked the market and given Tether's USDT a lead. By January 2026, USDC's market cap reached $75.12 billion, representing 73% year-on-year growth, outpacing USDT's 36% increase over the same period.
Circle has set its sights even higher, targeting a supply of $150 billion in the second half of 2026, up from its earlier target of $112 billion this year. The company attributes this progress to the expansion of its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP), which enables USDC to move between blockchain networks without liquidity fragmentation.
Another key factor contributing to USDC's resurgence is Circle's recent receipt of a limited-purpose trust charter from the New York Department of Financial Services. This designation grants Circle formal authority to offer fiduciary and custody services, opening doors for institutional clients seeking regulated access to on-chain markets.
