USDT Dethrones Ethereum in Rare Market Cap Upset

Tether's USDT momentarily surpassed Ethereum in market capitalization for the first time in nearly eight years, but its brief stint at the top was short-lived. According to data, USDT's market cap climbed to roughly $187.05 billion while Ethereum's slipped to about $186.263 billion, with the gap between the two assets falling below $1 billion.

The reversal quickly drew attention across the market, where traders have favored defensive positions during weeks of volatility. The stablecoin market has contracted by more than $7 billion in under 21 days, while investors have pulled about $400 billion from crypto.

Ethereum's total value locked has fallen to just $36 billion, a sign that on-chain activity is cooling alongside its price. Analysts are eyeing the trend as evidence of a potential 'stablecoin season' in 2026, with Mike McGlone predicting capital will continue to gravitate toward stability and utility.
