USDT, one of the most widely used stablecoins, has a surprising ownership structure. Contrary to popular assumption, control over USDT does not rest with individual wallet holders, but rather with the owner role of the contract that issues the token.

The owner role is a privileged address that can call functions closed to everyone else, deciding the rules under which the token works for all holders.
On the Tron network, where over half of all USDT balance resides, the contract at address TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t answers the owner() query with a multisig wallet address. A 2-of-3 multisig requires two out of three signatures to initiate any action.
The threshold for this contract is set at 2, meaning that if one key goes missing, the contract remains operable and can be taken over once two keys come together. This raises questions about security and operability, with the threshold serving as a compromise between the two.
