USDT Returns to Bitcoin via Utexo Infrastructure
Tether's USDT stablecoin is set to return to the Bitcoin network after a decade's absence, courtesy of the Utexo infrastructure. Utexo co-founder Viktor Ihnatiuk confirmed the rollout, which is scheduled for October 2026. This integration will enable private USDT transfers, direct BTC-USDT swaps, and Bitcoin-backed lending without requiring wrapped BTC.
The system will utilize a different technical structure, combining Bitcoin's UTXO model with RGB, a system that uses client-side validation for digital assets. This design allows transaction activity to remain largely off Bitcoin's public ledger. Utexo's platform will support native USDT activity on Bitcoin and Lightning, and will provide infrastructure for exchanges, wallets, and payment providers through APIs, software development tools, and cloud services.
Utexo's platform will also support lending with native Bitcoin used as collateral, designed to avoid wrapping BTC onto another blockchain before using it in the lending process. This structure gives Bitcoin another route for stablecoin activity and connects BTC liquidity with USDT payments.
