$USDT Supply Shrinks by $4 Billion as Crypto Demand Cools
Tether's $USDT supply has shrunk by $4 billion in just 60 days, marking a significant contraction after years of rapid expansion. According to Cryptoquant data, the 60-day rolling supply change for $USDT is roughly negative $4 billion. This decline represents about $870 million over the past 11 days alone.
The recent contraction has raised questions about whether investors are reducing their exposure to crypto altogether. Tether remains the dominant stablecoin, with around $184 billion in circulation and an estimated 60% share of total stablecoin supply. However, some analysts believe that part of this move may be a direct exit into fiat following Bitcoin's retreat from its 2021 peak.
Analyst Stacy Muur notes that 'some investors are redeeming stablecoins for fiat and leaving crypto entirely.' This is supported by the fact that $USDC supply has also fallen sharply, weakening the argument that capital is simply switching from Tether into Circle's stablecoin. Muur believes that a mix of factors is contributing to this decline, including some capital chasing yield, others rotating back into fiat, and less demand for stablecoins as speculative activity cools.
