Validator Market Consolidation: Asset Managers Take Over
The validator market is undergoing significant consolidation, with over 270 public exits and 1,258 abandoned validator seats since 2021. On-chain data from Crouton Digital's public tracker shows that signals in 40 of 41 tracked Cosmos SDK networks are indicating a shift towards vertical consolidation.
Initially, trading firms and exchanges acquired validators to support their staking products and reduce counterparty risk. Coinbase acquired Bison Trails for $457.3 million in January 2021, while Jump Trading bought Certus One in August 2021. Staked was acquired by Kraken in December 2021.
However, from late 2024 onward, the buyers have shifted to asset managers and data platforms, which are acquiring validators to embed staking as a feature inside their existing product suites. Bitwise acquired Attestant for $4 billion in assets in November 2024, while The Tie bought Stakin with $1.5 billion in assets under delegation in January 2026.
This change in buyer profile reflects the evolving landscape of the validator market, where validators are no longer standalone businesses but rather features inside someone else's product. As asset managers and data platforms continue to acquire validators, it is unclear what this means for independent operators, who may face challenges in exiting through mergers and acquisitions.
