Validator Market Consolidation Shifts Towards Asset Managers
The validator market is undergoing significant consolidation, with major staking-infrastructure M&A transactions taking place from 2021 to mid-2026. The first wave of acquisitions came from trading firms and exchanges buying infrastructure in 2021, with Coinbase acquiring Bison Trails for $457.3 million and Jump Trading acquiring Certus One.
However, the buyer profile shifted in late 2024, with asset managers and data platforms taking over as buyers. This shift marks a new era in staking, where validators are no longer standalone businesses but rather features embedded within existing product suites.
Bitwise acquired Attestant for approximately $4 billion in staked assets in November 2024, marking the firm's first major staking acquisition and laying the groundwork for its institutional staking division. The Tie followed suit by acquiring Stakin, a multi-chain staking provider with over $1.5 billion in assets under delegation.
The market is undergoing vertical consolidation from both sides, with infrastructure firms buying data companies and vice versa. Figment acquired Rated Labs, the industry leader in staking and validator analytics, while Blockdaemon bought Gem (on-ramp) and Sepior (key management).
