Validator Slashing Events: A Rare but Crucial Mechanism for Proof-of-Stake Networks

A validator slashing event occurs when a staker on a proof-of-stake network breaks a specific protocol rule, usually by accident.

This penalty involves burning part of their staked funds and forcibly removing them from the network.

Ethereum's documentation defines slashing as 'the destruction of some of a validator's stake along with ejection from the network.'

There are three offenses that can cause a validator slashing event: signing two different blocks for the same time slot, submitting an attestation that contradicts an earlier vote, and double voting by signing two separate attestations targeting the exact same checkpoint.
