Visa Details Stablecoin Strategy Amid Cross-Border Growth
Visa's Q3 earnings call revealed its broader stablecoin strategy. The company has been investing across multiple layers of the stablecoin ecosystem, including blockchain, issuance, wallets, infrastructure, and orchestration. In the third quarter, Visa made progress in both the issuance and application layers.
The company joined the OpenStandard consortium to issue the OpenUSD stablecoin for global money movement. The Visa stablecoin platform will enable partners to settle with Visa in stablecoins, provide onchain wallet-as-a-service infrastructure, and move money between fiat currencies and stablecoins, starting with OpenUSD. This integration with Pismo supports tokenized deposits for financial institutions.
Visa plans to add third-party tokenized deposit infrastructure providers in the future. The company views stablecoins and artificial intelligence as complementary technologies, with AI transforming the frontend of commerce while stablecoins reshape the backend. Cross-border volume increased 13% year over year, excluding intra-Europe, while processed transactions rose 10%, according to Visa's earnings release.
