Visa Unveils AI-Powered Commerce Platform for Agentic Payments
Visa has launched a new platform called Intelligent Commerce Connect, designed to enable AI agents to browse, select, and pay for goods and services on behalf of consumers. This marks another step in the company's push into agentic commerce.
The platform supports both Visa and non-Visa card payments and is compatible with major AI agent protocols. It handles payment initiation, tokenization, spend controls, authentication, and PCI compliance through a single integration via the Visa Acceptance Platform.
Intelligent Commerce Connect is currently in a pilot phase with select partners, with a broader rollout planned for later in 2026. This is not Visa's first foray into agentic payments; the company announced an experimental tool called Visa CLI in March, which allows AI agents to make same-day payments.
A separate integration was announced this week by Nevermined, connecting to Visa's Intelligent Commerce platform using Coinbase's x402 protocol. The integration enables AI agents to purchase digital goods and services autonomously. Users set spending rules at enrollment, AI agents transact within those rules, and merchants receive payment through their existing processors.
Erik Reppel, creator of the x402 protocol, said the system provides 'an open standard to request payment programmatically' and demonstrates how card infrastructure and protocol-level payment rails can work together. According to the x402 protocol's own website, the network has processed $24 million in transaction volume over the past 30 days.
