Vitalik Buterin Dismisses AI Hacking Concerns, Cites Formal Verification as Crypto Security Solution

Vitalik Buterin, one of the founders of Ethereum, has expressed his disagreement with the common view that AI hacking means cybersecurity is doomed. He believes that once people get their 'shit together', cybersecurity will naturally favor defenders.

Buterin made this statement after it was reported that roughly 90% of his net worth is in cryptocurrency, despite AI hacks being a growing concern. He views security as a personal bet and is willing to take the risk.

The Ethereum founder thinks that formal verification could change crypto security. This involves using advanced mathematical theorem proving to demonstrate that software abides by defined security rules. Buterin believes that this approach can make it difficult for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities.

He also emphasized the importance of whole-system verification, stating that verifying just a few critical parts may not be sufficient for crypto networks. Other supporting software, such as databases and networking layers, can also be included in the attack surface.
