Vitalik Buterin Outlines Ethereum’s Future Beyond Transactions
At the 12th Global Blockchain Summit in Shanghai, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, outlined a vision for blockchain systems expanding beyond mere transaction records. He emphasized the role of on-chain and off-chain computation and cryptography in verifying work and managing data visibility among participants. Buterin also highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence to assist in developing and validating complex cryptographic systems.
Two draft Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) reflect this technical direction. EIP-8288, co-authored by Buterin and Thomas Coratger, proposes allowing transactions to declare cryptographic dependencies. These dependencies could be aggregated off-chain into a recursive STARK, with a block then carrying a proof covering those dependencies. The proposal is currently marked as Draft and would require a network upgrade for activation.
The second proposal, FOCIL (Fork-choice Enforced Inclusion Lists), focuses on transaction inclusion. It suggests a 16-member validator committee to publish lists of transactions for block proposers to include. Validators would withhold votes from blocks that fail to meet these lists. Both proposals aim to enable networks to verify more work without placing every underlying proof on-chain, though their implementation timelines and real-world performance remain uncertain.
Buterin has previously described Ethereum as a long-term cryptographic computing system, a vision that aligns with these draft proposals. The proposals address proof verification and transaction inclusion, potentially expanding the capabilities of blockchain networks.
