Vitalik Buterin sees AI agents replacing traditional Ethereum apps
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, predicts a significant shift in how users interact with the blockchain, potentially within two years. Speaking at the OKX Now 2026 Summit in Singapore on October 6, 2026, Buterin suggested that traditional on-chain applications may fade as AI agents take over transaction handling. He envisions a future where AI acts as the new user interface, allowing users to instruct AI agents directly to perform tasks on the blockchain, bypassing the need for apps.
Buterin shared a personal example where he updated his Ethereum Name Service (ENS) records in just five minutes by instructing an AI agent, without using any traditional interface. This highlights the efficiency AI agents could bring to blockchain interactions, potentially reducing the need for manual steps like opening apps or signing transactions.
Looking ahead, Buterin discussed Ethereum's evolution toward a "cryptographic world computer" model, which emphasizes verifiable proofs over repeated execution across the network. He also mentioned the upcoming Hegotá upgrade in 2027, which he described as potentially the last major fork recognizable to developers from Ethereum's 2015 era.
However, Buterin cautioned about several risks associated with AI-driven transactions. These include privacy concerns, prompt injection attacks, and the security of AI agents themselves. He also referenced a major incident that caused around $1.4 billion in losses by targeting Ethereum's user-interaction layer, emphasizing that replacing humans with AI agents does not inherently make the system safer.
