Vitalik Buterin sees AI as the future interface for blockchain interactions
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin outlined a vision for how artificial intelligence could reshape the crypto industry during a keynote at the OKX NOW 2026 Summit in Singapore on October 6. Buterin argued that AI could become the primary interface for interacting with blockchains, transforming how users engage with decentralized systems. He demonstrated this concept by using a local AI agent to update his Ethereum Name Service (ENS) record, showcasing a user-controlled AI interaction that took about five minutes.
Buterin emphasized that AI could enhance security by reducing risks associated with compromised websites or malicious frontend code. He cited the $1.4 billion Safe-related incident as an example of vulnerabilities in the interaction layer between users and blockchain systems. AI agents could potentially mitigate some of these risks by interacting more directly with blockchain infrastructure, though they would introduce new security challenges.
However, Buterin acknowledged that AI is a double-edged sword. While it can help defenders identify vulnerabilities faster, attackers could also leverage AI to exploit weaknesses. He stressed the importance of formal verification and independent checks to ensure the reliability of AI-generated security findings. The Ethereum Foundation already uses AI agents for security testing but requires manual verification to confirm their findings.
Buterin’s perspective aligns with his broader thinking on secure AI and crypto access, emphasizing the importance of self-sovereign computing. He has consistently advocated for users to maintain control over their data and software, a theme that resonated throughout his keynote. The address provided a framework for understanding how AI will reshape crypto security, creating both opportunities and challenges for the industry.
