Vitalik Buterin Unveils Ethereum's Ambitious Future as Cryptographic World Computer
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, believes that the network is evolving beyond its traditional blockchain architecture. In an essay published on September 27, he describes the future vision for Ethereum as a 'cryptographic world computer' where specialized machines perform different tasks and cryptographic proofs verify their work.
The current blockchain architecture requires every node to download and reproduce the same data, leading to redundancy and limitations in processing capacity. Buterin proposes an alternative approach where heavy computation is separated from verification, allowing nodes to focus on verifying the proof rather than repeating the entire workload.
This shift would enable Ethereum's large decentralized network to become a source of processing capacity, with machines specializing in tasks and performing them in parallel. Developers would need to optimize their applications for parallelism, considering not only gas consumption but also how easily computation can be divided.
