Vitalik Buterin Unveils Ethereum's Plan for Quantum-Safe Blockchain Overhaul

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has outlined a plan for the next major upgrade to the blockchain. The upcoming Hegota fork is expected to be the last 'normal' fork and will lay the groundwork for a more significant transformation.

The post-Lean Ethereum architecture will merge Satoshi Nakamoto's ideas with cryptographic machinery developed over 50 years of academic work, enabling much more powerful properties than traditional blockchains. This 'cryptographic world computer' will replace three core properties: verification, consensus, and block construction.

Verification will move from downloading and re-executing every block to sampling data with PeerDAS and checking a SNARK. Consensus will shift to a proof of stake model, optimized for better performance. Block construction will transition from one miner deciding what goes in to multiple parties building it together.

The result is expected to significantly reduce finality time, with transactions included in 8-32 seconds versus the current 200 seconds for 12 confirmations. Censorship resistance will come from FOCIL, a scheme where validators publish pending transactions, enforced by the fork-choice rule.
