Vitalik Buterin Warns Basic Pseudonymity No Longer Enough for Ethereum

Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin warns that basic pseudonymity may no longer be enough to protect users as artificial intelligence makes it easier to correlate blockchain data. He argues that separating a real name from an address is no longer sufficient, especially with increasingly powerful analysis tools.

The Ethereum team is developing private reads, private writes, and private proving to reduce metadata exposure and support selective disclosure. This approach uses cryptography and zero-knowledge technology to give users more control over financial and identity data while preserving verifiability.

Buterin emphasizes that modern cryptography can make privacy programmable, allowing applications to determine what data is revealed, to whom, and under which conditions. This could redefine on-chain access as Ethereum expands across decentralized finance, tokenized assets, payments, and institutional applications.
