Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has introduced a new privacy feature called “paranoid mode” for his AI agent, aiming to protect users' financial secrets. The tool, unveiled on October 16, 2026, is designed to obscure user identities, request origins, and payment details when interacting with AI assistants that manage investments. The experimental setup combines Tor, zkAPI, cover traffic, and local AI prompt rewriting to enhance privacy.
The system addresses risks posed by AI agents accessing wallets and financial tools, which could inadvertently expose sensitive information like trading plans or portfolio details. Buterin’s solution includes assigning separate Tor circuits to each conversation, masking requests with random traffic, and using zkAPI for anonymous payments. The payment system already operates on the Ethereum mainnet, accepting deposits in assets like ETH and USDC.
Despite its advancements, the system has limitations. While prompts are rewritten to reduce identifying details, providers may still access these rewritten versions. Additionally, Buterin notes that an AI provider collaborating with Tor’s first relay could potentially identify real requests by studying traffic timing. He advocates for a more specialized privacy network, though it would come with higher data costs.
For investors, the long-term viability of private AI payments remains uncertain. Buterin acknowledges that the system is “getting quite usable,” but widespread adoption and immediate benefits to Ethereum’s price are not yet evident. Lower zkAPI transaction fees are expected, suggesting potential future use for Ethereum infrastructure.
