Vitalik Buterin's Snowmoon: A Vision of Decentralized Governance
Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has published his first full-length science fiction novel, Snowmoon, which spans 32 chapters and 103,000 English words. The novel is open-sourced under the GPL v3 license and reflects Buterin's decade-long reflections on decentralized governance, privacy, mechanism design, and pluralism.
The story takes place in an alternate future where neither Bitcoin nor Ethereum exist, yet the operational logic of this world nearly serves as a complete realization of the Ethereum vision. The protagonist, Gladias, lives in Veridia, a highly advanced society of decentralized governance, where almost nothing is explicitly 'forbidden' but a precise tax and subsidy system guides behavior.
The novel explores two narrative threads: the everyday life of Gladias in Veridia and the struggles of Zei in a country occupied by the Arctic Empire. As the story unfolds, the two threads converge, and Gladias becomes an advisor to the resistance group, the Kungaupei, in their fight against the Arctic Empire.
The novel concludes with a debate on 'what constitutes a good society,' where the characters discuss the importance of predicting the future and the balance between individual freedom and collective well-being. The philosophy of water and ice is used to illustrate the ideal society, where every individual acts independently, yet the system remains balanced.
The novel is a unique blend of science fiction and philosophical discussion, bringing governance mechanisms to life in a way that Buterin's blog posts never could.
