Vitalik Outlines Ethereum's Evolution Into Cryptographic World Computer
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined the network's transition into a 'cryptographic world computer.'
In an essay published on September 27, Buterin described Ethereum as evolving beyond its traditional role as a blockchain, combining blockchain infrastructure with advanced cryptography and decentralized off-chain systems.
The post-Hegotá architecture will rely on decentralized layers between users and the underlying blockchain, providing additional functionality without requiring every component to operate directly as a blockchain.
Buterin emphasized the importance of privacy in this vision, pointing to zero-knowledge proofs as an increasingly important technology for enabling private computation and verification while retaining Ethereum's decentralized properties. He also discussed the potential future development of indistinguishability obfuscation (iO), a cryptographic technique that could eventually allow computation to remain encrypted.
The transition is expected to begin with Hegotá, the Ethereum fork planned for next year, which will be followed by significant technical challenges in making zero-knowledge proofs sufficiently efficient and secure. Buterin acknowledged that managing and parallelizing access to large amounts of blockchain state could prove more complex.
