Wake County Residents Targeted by Sophisticated Jury Duty Scams via Crypto ATMs

A Cary woman fell victim to a sophisticated jury duty scam that targeted her via phone and cryptocurrency ATM. The scammers, who claimed to be law enforcement officers, knew Mia's full name, maiden name, and Social Security number, making the call seem legitimate.

The caller convinced Mia she had missed jury duty and faced civil and criminal charges. He directed her to withdraw thousands of dollars from her bank account and deposit them into a cryptocurrency ATM at a gas station in Apex.

Mia lost thousands of dollars, which were supposed to cover only the 'state portion' of the charges. The caller then told her she needed to pay a federal portion as well. Authorities warn that residents should be cautious if they receive such calls and never make immediate payments or use cryptocurrency ATMs for suspicious transactions.
