Wall Street Speeds Up Blockchain Transition Amid Regulatory Catch-Up
Two major developments in financial infrastructure this week have accelerated Wall Street's transition to blockchain technology. Ondo Finance has launched Intelligent Portfolios, allowing eligible non-U.S. investors to buy transferable onchain tokens representing BlackRock-designed portfolio strategies.
The portfolios are built on top of traditional investment management techniques and can be transferred between compatible blockchain applications. This marks a significant shift in the way financial products are distributed, as it decouples asset managers from tokenized product operations.
Meanwhile, IBM has connected bank infrastructure to Swift's blockchain-based ledger for 24/7 tokenized deposit transactions. This integration enables participating clients to move digital assets around the clock ahead of final settlement through existing systems.
The SEC has introduced its Innovation Exemption for tokenized securities, a five-year, conditional framework allowing Tokenized Securities Venues to facilitate limited trading of tokenized National Market System stocks. The exemption addresses concerns that tokenization is moving faster than regulatory frameworks can keep up, potentially leading to foreign markets offering tokenized exposure to American equities without an equivalent domestic option.
