Warren Seeks Crypto Regulation Despite Clarity Bill Opposition

Share

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren has expressed her desire to push ahead with legislation to regulate cryptocurrencies, despite opposing the Clarity bill in its current form.

Warren, a critic of cryptocurrencies and top Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, argued that the bill should include rules on public officials' cryptocurrency investments and measures to strengthen national security, consumer protection, and responses to illicit funds.

She criticized the ethics provisions as ineffective in preventing President Donald Trump's conflicts of interest, stating that they give enforcement authority to presidential appointees and effectively do not apply to the president.

The Clarity bill failed to reach the 60-vote threshold with 49 in favor, and seven centrist Democratic senators who had taken part in bill negotiations voted against it. Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis criticized Democrats for their changing demands during negotiations.
