Warsh's Hawkish Tone Sinks Bitcoin and Gold Rally
The recent rally in Bitcoin and gold has come to an abrupt end following Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's hawkish speech at Jackson Hole. Both assets had been climbing in tandem as investors sought safe-haven alternatives due to debasement fears.
Gold traded at its highest level since mid-May, reaching $4,697 per ounce on Tuesday, while Bitcoin touched $81,354 on Binance last week. However, the two assets have since reversed course, with gold and Bitcoin falling by 5.6% and almost 5%, respectively.
The debasement trade, which fueled the rally in both assets, is now facing its first genuine headwind. Warsh's speech marked a shift in tone, as he emphasized the need to address inflation and put interest rates on the agenda for consideration.
Grayscale research found that Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold has climbed above 50%, while its correlation with the Nasdaq 100 fell from over 60% to roughly 33%. This indicates that investors are treating Bitcoin as a monetary hedge rather than a leveraged bet on technology stocks.
