Weekend Trading in Crypto: Understanding the Liquidity Gap
Crypto trading is a 24/7 activity, but liquidity levels vary significantly between weekdays and weekends. According to SwallowAcademy, weekdays have more depth behind them due to a larger financial machine being active.
On weekdays, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs trade, authorized participants can create and redeem shares during business hours, institutional desks are fully staffed, and arbitrage links crypto to futures, equities, rates, and FX. This deeper market structure allows for more two-sided liquidity to absorb orders and more participants to challenge a move.
When news hits on a weekday, the deeper markets have more capacity to price it. However, the CME explanation changed in 2026 when it moved its cryptocurrency futures and options to 24/7 trading, apart from maintenance windows. This means that saying 'CME is closed on weekends' is no longer accurate.
Weekend liquidity can still be thinner even though regulated CME crypto futures now keep trading. News does not wait for Monday, and geopolitics, hacks, liquidations, and crypto-native announcements can all hit on Saturday. The difference is that they may land in a market with less depth, making weekend moves more prone to overshooting.
The Friday close remains useful as a reference because it marks the last price before the full weekday market structure steps away. If price drifts far from that area over the weekend, Monday brings back ETF trading, more desk activity, broader arbitrage, and the rest of the traditional market.
