Wells Fargo Plans Stablecoin Launch for 2027

Share

Wells Fargo & Company (WFC) is making a significant push into stablecoins as part of its strategy to enhance cross-border and institutional payments. During its third-quarter 2026 earnings call on October 13, CEO Charlie Scharf confirmed the bank's plans to launch a stablecoin in the first half of 2027. This initiative is part of a broader collaboration involving 20 other international financial institutions, aiming to support wholesale, institutional, and retail use cases.

The stablecoin, expected to be U.S. dollar-denominated, will emphasize compliance, governance, and risk management to facilitate payments and digital asset settlements. This move builds on Wells Fargo's earlier efforts, including a collaboration with Early Warning Services to develop a reserve-backed stablecoin and a trademark application for “WFUSD” in March 2026. The bank is also expanding its blockchain and cryptocurrency capabilities, having launched tokenized deposits on its proprietary blockchain platform in September 2026.

Beyond stablecoins, Wells Fargo is exploring partnerships to enhance its crypto trading capabilities. Reports suggest the bank is in talks with Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, to secure liquidity for crypto trading. This potential arrangement could allow Wells Fargo to expand its crypto services without developing its own exchange infrastructure.

The stablecoin initiative is seen as a long-term growth opportunity, with the potential to strengthen Wells Fargo's payments franchise through faster transactions and international expansion. However, the success of this initiative will depend on the pace of adoption, commercial viability, and evolving regulatory requirements. CFO Mike Santomassimo noted that blockchain-based payment solutions could help the bank pursue international business without significant investments in local operations.
