Westfield Residents Fall Victim to Scam Demanding Bitcoin
A scam targeting Westfield residents has come to light after a victim reported being contacted by someone claiming to be a Westfield Police Sergeant. The impersonator falsely claimed that the victim had active warrants and demanded $13,000 in Bitcoin to avoid arrest. The victim transferred the funds through a Bitcoin kiosk before realizing they had been scammed.
The incident occurred on August 27 at 3:49 p.m. in the 400 block of Central Avenue. The Westfield Police Department has since advised the victim to contact their bank regarding the transaction.
This is not an isolated incident, as another resident reported fraudulent credit card charges for two iPhones purchased through T-Mobile on August 28 at 3:56 p.m. in the 400 block of Park Street.
