WGMI Surges as Mining Equities Transmute into AI Infrastructure Plays
The Valkyrie Bitcoin Miners ETF (WGMI) and the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) are two popular funds that claim to offer exposure to Bitcoin. However, their performance over the past year has revealed a significant divergence between them.
While Bitcoin itself fell by 43% over one year, WGMI surged by 243.77%. On the other hand, IBIT tracked Bitcoin almost perfectly, falling 31.78% against Bitcoin's 30.48% drop. This unexpected gap is largely due to the fact that WGMI has evolved into an AI infrastructure proxy, driven by data center deals and energy contracts rather than just Bitcoin mining.
WGMI's returns are now heavily influenced by its holdings in companies such as Core Scientific, TeraWulf, and IREN, which have repurposed their data center capacity to host AI and high-performance computing workloads. This shift has disconnected the fund from Bitcoin's price movements and introduced a new layer of risk.
The divergence between WGMI and IBIT highlights the importance of understanding what each fund is actually betting on. IBIT, with its 99.93% allocation to spot Bitcoin, remains a clean and straightforward play on the digital asset itself. On the other hand, WGMI has become a unique product that belongs in a portfolio focused on AI data center buildout.
